Postdoctoral Fellowship in the laboratory of Woong-Ki Kim at Tulane University


AAn excellent postdoctoral research opportunity is immediately available in the laboratory of Woong-Ki Kim at the Tulane National Primate Research Center to explore macrophage biology and to develop macrophage-targeted therapy for the treatment of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, and diabetes. We are seeking highly motivated Research Scholars who want to pursue and academic career in neuroimmunology and macrophage biology. The laboratory uses non-human primate (NHP) models to connect mouse investigations and human observations of many chronic inflammatory diseases. 

The postdoctoral fellow positions will manage NIH-funded studies that are exploring the role of macrophages in HAND and brain aging. Open research opportunities also include the investigation of the therapeutic potential of macrophage-targeted approaches in the translational NHP models of diabetes and obesity. All these projects are supported by high collaborative, multidisciplinary teams of scientists and extensive core services.

Cancer Therapeutics Training (CT2) Program at Moores Cancer Center

Description: The goal of the Cancer Therapeutics Training (CT2) Program is to train the next generation of leaders in the field of cancer drug and diagnostics development. The CT2 Program is open to both M.D.s and Ph.D.s and provides an intensive 2-year period of research and training in the development of novel cancer therapeutics or diagnostics at the Moores Cancer Center. Trainees not only execute a research program under the direction of a member of the faculty of this Comprehensive Cancer Center, but also participate in coursework, seminars, and lectures. The research may be basic, translational, or clinical, yet all trainees will become versed in each major phase of the drug development process. Graduates of the program are prepared to transition to leadership roles in cancer therapeutics development in either an academic or commercial environment.

Postdoc position available in the Zarif Lab at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine


The Zarif laboratory at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and driven postdoctoral candidate to dissect and target novel surface markers expressed on myeloid cells and its impact on prostate cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis. Utilizing a syngeneic prostate cancer tumor models, targeting peptides, and checkpoint antibodies to measure anti-tumor immunity will be evaluated.  This highly translational research project aims to provide a mechanism of targeting tumors that have poor infiltration of cytotoxic T Cells and lack favorable responses to T cell mediated therapies as a monotherapy.

A post-doctoral position is available in the Borriello laboratory, located in the Department of Cancer and Cellular Biology in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Philadelphia (US).


Our lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms of dormancy and metastatic recurrence, with a particular emphasis on the role of the tumor microenvironment. We use a multi-disciplinary approach to study the biology of metastasis, integrating cell signaling, biochemistry, molecular biology, multiplex tissue imaging, several mouse models, and intravital imaging of tumor cells in live animals. Your Tasks and Responsibilities

As a part of the Research Department, you will contribute to the characterization of newly identified immune checkpoint molecules and actively participate in the screening and nomination of functional drug candidates for further development. You will work in a modern, semi-automated laboratory, and will be eager to evaluate and employ new state-of-the-art techniques for the further development of our target-tailored drug screening efforts. Some of your daily tasks will involve:

▪ Culture and maintenance of primary immune cells and immortalized tumor cell lines

▪ Immune cell separation from Leukopaks, buffy coats and purity assessment

▪ In vitro primary immune cell-based assays such as co-culture assays, immune cell activation and cytotoxicity assays

▪ Execution of immunological endpoint assays such as flow cytometry, ELISA, multiplex analysis and image analysis using IncuCyte live cell imaging device

▪ Perform various molecular biology assays such as PCR and qPCR, Western Blotting, gene editing, transfection, and transduction of cells

▪ Participate routinely in laboratory management and organization

▪ Execution of experiments both independently and in a team, including diligent analysis, documentation, and presentation of your results in internal team meetings


What we are looking for

• You hold a university degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in biology, molecular medicine, biotechnology, or a related field, or have completed a vocational training as laboratory assistant such as BTA, MTA, CTA and have at least 3 years of relevant work experience, preferably in an industry setting

• You possess extensive hands-on experience in primary human immune cell-based assays such as PBMCs and immune subset isolation, cell culture assay and multicolor flow cytometry

• You are experienced in using data analysis software such as GraphPad Prism and Flow Jo

• Ideally you have experience with CRISPR/Cas-based genome editing or in transfection/transduction of primary human immune cells or cell lines

• You are motivated to work independently and collaboratively to meet project goals

• You demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills who is effective at working in a collaborative, fast-paced and diverse team

• You are fluent in English (spoken and written)

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist with extensive expertise in cancer immunology/immunotherapy. The successful candidate will have substantial experience in studying T cells and myeloid cells both in vivo and in vitro, with a specific interest in myeloid cell progenitors and/or lipid metabolism. You will independently design and execute projects/experiments, troubleshoot and optimize methods, and generate, interpret, and report scientific data clearly and concisely. A PhD in Immunology or a related field and a proven postdoctoral record with strong publications are required. Strong expertise with mouse tumor models is desirable. This is an onsite role requiring 5 days per week of onsite presence.

As a Senior Scientist in our Oncology R&D department, you will be a key member of a team focused on designing novel therapeutics to target myeloid biology and immunotherapy, supporting projects through the drug discovery and development process. You will bring your theoretical and practical expertise in immunology to establish assay systems and deliver datasets that will have a direct impact on immune-oncology therapeutics.

Accountabilities

  • Independently conduct mechanistic cancer immunology and drug discovery research experiments using techniques in immunology, molecular, and cellular biology
  • Assess and report data with little guidance in a clear and concise manner with a strong understanding of its implications within the overall context of drug discovery
  • Maintain a well-developed understanding of approaches to investigate the function of myeloid cells and aspects of drug discovery
  • Actively liaise between programs/departments, sharing scientific knowledge and feedback on others’ experiments to ensure efficient relay of information and translation of data
  • Ensure own work and work of peers is compliant with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health, and Environment standards, and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations
  • May be asked to lead or co-lead a project team and contribute to scientific publication goals

Essential Skills/Experience
 - A PhD in immunology, cancer biology, or related field with minimum of 2 years of experience

 - Extensive experience in studying T cells or myeloid cells: MDSC, macrophages, dendritic cells, expertise or knowledge of peptide vaccines

 - Strong hands-on skills in basic biochemical and immunological methods including multi-color flow cytometry (FACS), ELISA/multiplex assays, western blotting, luminescence assays, cell killing assays, high content imaging

 - Excellent organizational and communication skills

 - Ability to work in a high-paced team environment, plan and meet timelines

 - Proven track record of success in your research, and experience preparing written scientific reports (e.g., manuscripts) and oral presentations to broad and diverse audiences

Desirable Skills/Experience
 - In vivo expertise in murine tumor models
 - Experience developing cancer immunotherapy including cancer vaccines and cellular therapies
